This week we have been learning about birds. We have seen birds that live in different places, are different colors, are different sizes and some do not fly. We also learned a new big word oviparous. We learned that it is a name for animals that come from an egg.
The most exciting thing this week is that we have eggs in an incubator getting ready to hatch. They have 6 days left until time to hatch. We have been candling eggs to look inside. We saw the heart beating, veins, and the blood ring.
On Wednesdays we have been having a special visitor Mrs. Oberbye and Amanda. They have been bringing in different types of chickens for us to see. We got to pet a Black Giant hen.
We are excited about the new chicks that we may have.

In P.E. we have been learning about roller skating, we have learned how to stand up and how to toe stop. Our fifth grade buddies have been helping us. It has been lots of fun.
We have been working with Mrs. Newport's class learning about different types of cloth. We found out that cotton comes from a plant, wool comes from sheep and silk comes from silk worms. To finish up our project we went to Spurlock Museum on a filed trip, it was exciting. We made a Adinkra cloth while we were at the museum.
What has a backbone, is cold blooded and has dry scaley skin? A reptile. We have learned about snakes, turtles, alligators and lizards.
Finally in math we have learned some new songs about pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.
It has been a busy week!

Dem Bones, Dem Bomes, Dem Dry Bones
In math this week we have been learning about pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and half dollars. We are learning how much they are worth and we learned that they have a heads and tails. We have also been learning the months of the year and that there are 12 of them.
We have started learning about our bodies and how they work. This week we started looking at our bones. We learned that there are 206 bones in the whole body and there are 22 bones in the foot. Next we learned about our skin. Everybody has different colors of skin. We discovered that our skin can be the same color as different foods. We found out what a patella, phalanges and femur are. Finally we have started drawing ourselves.
We have also started working on a class book. Everyone is writing a different story about things we have done in school. When our book is done it will be a really nice hardcover book.
Wow this has been a busy week!

This week we also learned about some famous African Americans; Barack Obama (the first African American president from Illinois), Martin Luther King Jr. (who had a dream that we should all be nice to each other), Garrett Morgan (invented the stoplight). We discovered that Abe Lincoln was from Illinois and he was the president who helped to free the slaves, he is also on the penny.
Last Saturday we had our school carnival, it was so much fun. Our class decided that everything was really fun and we won lots of prizes.

Working with our Uni High Buddies

This week we worked with high school students from University High School. They helped us learn about sand and water. On Tuesday we learned if things could sink or float. On Wednesday we made boats and tested them to see if they would float. On Thursday we looked at how many drops of water can fit on a penny, one group fit 40 drops on their penny. Finally on Friday we looked at how sand and salt are alike and different. We put sand in water and it sank then we put salt in water and it disappeared. We want to say thank you to the high school students who helped us have fun and learn.
